Returnable shopping bags continue their takeover – the bags are now being introduced by Sokos Herkku!

Sokos Herkku in Tampere, Finland wants to make it easier for its customers to make responsible choices. The shop has introduced returnable shopping bags that allow customers to carry their purchases home responsibly. The bags are manufactured and maintained by Lindström.

Making responsible consumption easy is important for Sokos Herkku: “Who would not want to be responsible, but there is not always time or energy for it. Implementing responsibility should not be too difficult”, says Viivi Pärssinen, Communications Specialist at Pirkanmaan Osuuskauppa.

Sokos Herkku belongs to S Group which has joined an international commitment aimed at reducing the unnecessary use of plastic, developing reusable packaging and improving recycling: “S Group’s goals include, for example, having all of the packaging of our own label products recyclable by the end of 2022. At Sokos, plastic bags were made subject to a charge, which reduced their use significantly”, says Pärssinen.

Returnable shopping bag is an ecological choice

The returnable shopping bag is available from the shop check-out for a deposit of 5 euros. When the bag is returned to the shop, the deposit paid for it is refunded. Dirty or damaged bags are washed and maintained at Lindström’s laundry. Regular washing and maintenance are designed to keep the life-cycle of the bags as long as possible and their environmental impact low. “In addition to being eco-friendly, the bag is made of durable material and is pleasant to use”, says Pärssinen.

Pärssinen believes that consumers will respond positively to the bags: “There has been interest even before the launch. Many people will certainly be happy to choose the returnable shopping bag as their solution.”
